I finally got around to reading and reviewing Gail Honeyman's Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, which I mentioned in this blog some months ago. It topped an Australian poll of favourite reads this year, which prompted me to buy it. There's a link to the complete list from that poll in my review, which can be found here.
The results for the Vogel Award have been announced this week and the result is that there is to be no winner this year!
The Vogel Award is a literary award for young Australian writers supported by the Vogel Bread company. The writers must be unpublished and under 35 years old. Authors whose careers have been launched by winning the award include Tim Winton and Kate Grenville. Winners of the award receive $20,000 and are guaranteed publication by Allen & Unwin Publishers.
This year is the third time in the award’s near 40-year history that no winner has been announced. The judges said that no manuscript lived up to the award’s standards.
Ouch!
