One of the problems in trying to comprehensively follow the many possible paths through the story is that there is a great deal of repetition. There are many fun elements of the story, but there are some scenes you seem to be constantly returned to if you try to follow the multiple paths, such as the balcony scene. It is possible to just ignore the numbering and read the book, but this would offer a very disjointed experience. In trying to follow the paths, using my pencil and book marks, I was trying to maintain some coherence to the story, but this sometimes became tedious as a result.
